Five dimensions in every block
Each fixed five-item block includes coherence, direction, mattering, contribution, and connection exactly once. Blocks alternate between presence and salience.
This original meaning in life test explores coherence, direction, mattering, contribution, and connection. It keeps two views separate: what you experienced during the past four weeks and what feels important in your life right now.
Frequency during the past four weeks, from “Not at all” to “Very often.”
Importance right now, from “Not important right now” to “Central right now.”
What the result preserves
Ten visible scores
Presence and salience remain separate for all five dimensions; there is no total meaning score.
Exact ties retained
Equal scores share a tier. Stable display order never manufactures a leading source.
Transparent arithmetic
Raw 0–12 sums and response-range positions are visible; none is a percentile or population norm.
Questions, not prescriptions
Between-lens contrasts can select a prompt, but never prove a problem or required action.
The response design
This reflection alternates two questions: what you have actually experienced during the past four weeks, and what feels important now. Use the matching response labels shown with each item; do not answer importance items as if they describe your current reality.
Each fixed five-item block includes coherence, direction, mattering, contribution, and connection exactly once. Blocks alternate between presence and salience.
Each dimension is asked through inner life, daily life, and relationships or community under both lenses. Presence includes one concrete reverse-keyed item per dimension.
Frequency labels answer recent experience; importance labels answer current salience. The shared option IDs never make their wording or interpretation interchangeable.
The five-dimension reflection model
This framework does not claim to catalog every source of meaning. The distinctions help you ask more precise questions while keeping spiritual, creative, cultural, ecological, and other sources open.
A subjective sense that experiences, roles and changes can be understood within a workable account of your life, even when that account remains incomplete or revisable.
A subjective sense that chosen aims provide orientation across near-term decisions and longer horizons, without requiring one permanent calling or a fully specified life plan.
A subjective sense that your existence, choices or presence count in ways that are not reducible to visibility, output, status or immediate approval from other people.
Access to opportunities where effort, knowledge, care or craft benefits another person, a shared project, a community, a place or something that can continue beyond the immediate self.
Access to relationships or communities where you experience inclusion, mutual recognition and reciprocal care without needing to erase important parts of yourself.
Similar words, different questions
This page owns a current meaning-in-life reflection. It does not find one calling, rank your life's worth, or repeat the wider Ikigai synthesis under another name.
Looks at recent coherence, direction, mattering, contribution, and connection, then keeps experienced presence separate from current importance. It returns ten descriptive scores, not one meaning level.
Purpose concerns valued aims and direction. It can contribute to a meaningful life, but it is not the same as coherence, mattering, belonging, or one permanent mission this test can reveal.
Ikigain's flagship lens brings together enjoyment, strengths, contribution, and sustainable opportunity. Those four questions are broader than this recent two-lens snapshot and are not calculated here.
Scoring and interpretation boundary
Each dimension-aspect contains three 0-4 items. One presence item per dimension is reverse keyed. Raw sums range from 0 to 12 and are displayed as positions in the possible response range. Salience-minus-presence is an arithmetic contrast only, not a validated need or deficit score.
The visible formula is raw score ÷ 12 × 100, rounded to two decimal places. This rescaling adds no population comparison or measurement precision beyond the three underlying item responses.
This original English reflection is research-informed but has not been psychometrically validated. Its response anchors are editorial descriptions, not population norms or clinical cut scores.
Exact ties remain explicit. Presence and salience gaps are arithmetic response-range differences with no established minimum meaningful difference. Salience-minus-presence contrasts compare different anchors and are reflection prompts only—not need, deprivation or deficit scores.
Research-informed, not borrowed
No item, response key, norm, scoring rule or interpretation was copied from SoMe, MLQ, MEMS or another published meaning questionnaire. The cited works are construct references only. Citation does not transfer rights to reproduce source instruments and does not imply endorsement of this original form.
Used for: The conceptual distinction among coherence, purpose/direction and significance rather than treating meaning as one undifferentiated construct.
Used for: The tripartite comprehension-purpose-mattering vocabulary and the need to keep subconstructs conceptually explicit.
Used for: The distinction between concrete sources/pathways and an overall judgment of meaningfulness. No SoMe item or scoring key was used.
Used for: Evidence supporting belonging as a social pathway associated with perceived meaning, while not treating connection as the only route.
Used for: The generativity lineage behind contribution that benefits people or work beyond the immediate self. No scale item was used.
Used for: Empirical support for separating coherence, purpose and existential mattering and for treating mattering as more than public status or performance.
Questions before you begin
Meaning is broader than one future aim. This reflection separates recent coherence, direction, mattering, contribution, and connection from how important each feels now. It does not find one life purpose or calculate Ikigai; those require wider evidence about direction, contribution, circumstances, and action.
Presence asks how often an experience appeared during the past four weeks. Salience asks how important that source feels right now. Something can matter greatly without appearing often, or appear often without being a current priority, so the two sections are scored and interpreted separately.
No. The displayed subtraction compares two different response anchors and is used only to choose a reflection prompt. It has not been validated as a gap, deprivation, intervention target, or measure of urgency.
No. The result keeps ten scores: recent presence and current salience for each of five dimensions. Coherence, direction, and mattering are proposed components; contribution and connection are common pathways. Combining them would hide distinctions the reflection is designed to preserve.
No. This is an original, research-informed Ikigain reflection, not the SoMe, MLQ, MEMS, a diagnostic instrument, or a replacement for professional support. Its items and scoring have not yet completed cognitive interviewing, reliability, factor, invariance, or validity studies.
Yes. Exact ties stay tied, including all-five ties. A flat profile can be genuine or can provide limited evidence for ranking dimensions. The result shows response-pattern review notes without calling them proof of careless or invalid answering.
No. The complete result appears immediately. Progress uses the secure assessment service, with only a bounded short-lived retry copy if a save is interrupted. Account access and newsletter consent remain separate choices.
Meaning language is culturally sensitive. A responsible locale requires native adaptation, bilingual key review, cognitive interviews, and its own evidence review. Automatically translating and duplicating the English test would not be enough.
