The ordinary day
What you might actually spend time doing.
A portrait client wants images that feel natural. Before you take a picture, you clarify the intended use, location, timing, and what the client hopes to see. You plan the light and composition, inspect your equipment, and keep the session moving while helping a person feel comfortable. Afterward, you transfer files, select frames, edit color and crop, export in suitable formats, and archive the originals. BLS includes composition, lighting, editing, a portfolio, and image management in the occupation; O*NET also lists consultation and equipment checks.
BLS describes advertising, scheduling, records, charging customers, and paying bills as responsibilities of photographers who own their business. There may be travel, standing, heavy gear, weekends, and seasonal fluctuations. A launch guide should let readers see the complete service: a reliable brief, a calm session, consistent images, clear delivery, and enough administrative discipline to repeat it.
The less photogenic side
What the work asks of you.
BLS says 67% of photographers were self-employed in 2025, while its wage figures exclude self-employed people. Its May 2025 median hourly wage of $21.47 therefore should not be presented as a freelance rate or the take-home result from a booking. Editing, travel, equipment, taxes, and finding clients take time outside the shoot. Have readers calculate their own hours and costs for a pilot before they imagine a price.
The outlook is mixed by kind of work. BLS projects overall photographer employment to decline 1% from 2025 to 2035, citing smartphone quality and partial substitution of some stock imagery by AI-generated images. It also expects continued demand for portraits and commercial photography, and growth in self-employed photographer employment. Those statements do not identify a guaranteed niche; they suggest testing the value of a specific service for a specific client.
Ask someone in the specific setting you hope to enter to describe a difficult recent day. Listen for who decides, what gets checked, and what happens when the plan changes.
