What you might actually spend time doing.
Suppose a service has a confusing sign-up step. A product manager might review feedback, ask what the business seeks, and compare fixes with colleagues. O*NET lists Product Manager among reported titles for Marketing Managers, whose tasks include market research, product-development input, and pricing. BLS also describes collaboration with product development and sales. These sources illuminate market-facing work; they do not define every digital-product job.
The manager might write the problem, evidence, options, risks, and a way to check whether a change helps. In software, they may coordinate with designers and engineers; authority varies by employer. Project Management Specialists are a separate BLS/O*NET occupation focused on budgets, schedules, and resources. Ask whether a vacancy owns product choices, marketing, delivery, or a mixture.
The less photogenic side
What the work asks of you.
The appeal is connecting customer needs, commercial realities, and delivery. The difficulty is choosing with incomplete evidence. One vocal request does not prove a change helps other users. A useful proposal exposes assumptions, who is affected, and what other work must wait.
O*NET’s Marketing Managers profile includes personnel and promotional duties that a software product manager may not hold; an app-focused role may require technical fluency the proxy does not capture. BLS describes related experience as common for marketing managers. Ask whether “manager” entails direct reports or product decisions.
Ask someone in the specific setting you hope to enter to describe a difficult recent day. Listen for who decides, what gets checked, and what happens when the plan changes.
