Child and family social worker salary: pay and its limits
One number can orient you; it cannot price your first offer, a freelance project or your cost of living.
The BLS wage category combines child, family and school work. It is not a local family-services starting salary. The headline social-worker median is a different, broader figure.
Read the figure carefully
What is—and is not—being measured.
BLS's May 2025 median combines child, family, and school social workers; its headline outlook covers all social workers. Neither isolates local family support or a beginner's offer. O*NET also combines these roles, so its listed tasks need not appear in every job.
A median places half the measured workers above and half below it. It does not describe a beginner’s wage or explain the mix of hours, benefits, geography and experience in an individual offer. If your path is self-employment, revenue and profit are different again.
Before you compare offers
Three questions worth asking.

Compare agency, government and school roles separately.

Check caseload, travel, supervision, on-call expectations and benefits alongside salary.

Confirm the regulated job title and credential required for the actual duties.
Make it local
Use real postings as a second source.
Compare pay and openings for government child welfare, family-service organizations, and schools. Read postings for travel, on-call work, caseload, supervision, benefits, and credentials. If “social worker” is used loosely, confirm the regulated title and allowed duties before assuming you qualify.
Save two or three listings with similar duties and location. Write down the advertised range, required experience, contract type and what is not stated. This comparison is more useful than converting a U.S. national median into another country’s currency.
