High school math teacher salary: pay and its limits
One number can orient you; it cannot price your first offer, a freelance project or your cost of living.
BLS does not isolate high-school math teachers in this wage line. District schedules, step placement, calendar and benefits matter more for a particular offer.

What is—and is not—being measured.
BLS's May 2025 national median and national secondary-teacher outlook exclude special and career or technical education; neither isolates math or predicts one district's hiring. BLS also links public-school demand to local budgets and enrollment. Use these measures as occupational context, not an offer.
A median places half the measured workers above and half below it. It does not describe a beginner’s wage or explain the mix of hours, benefits, geography and experience in an individual offer. If your path is self-employment, revenue and profit are different again.
Before you compare offers
Three questions worth asking.

Read actual district salary schedules and where prior experience places a new hire.

Compare contract days, benefits and activities outside class hours.

Do not divide the annual salary into an assumed number of classroom-only hours.
Make it local
Use real postings as a second source.
Compare district salary schedules, contract calendars, math vacancies by grade, and benefits. Ask how pay is distributed across the year and what activities fall outside class time. A vacancy count, salary step, and actual assignment answer different questions about fit and income.
Save two or three listings with similar duties and location. Write down the advertised range, required experience, contract type and what is not stated. This comparison is more useful than converting a U.S. national median into another country’s currency.
