Interior designer salary: pay and its limits
One number can orient you; it cannot price your first offer, a freelance project or your cost of living.
BLS wage statistics exclude self-employed income. A designer’s studio revenue, project fee and take-home earnings are different quantities.

These are annual U.S. employee wage thresholds from May 2025, shown on the same $0–$150,000 scale. They are not a minimum, maximum or career progression. Below the 10th threshold are 10% of measured workers; above the 90th are 10%.

Read the figure carefully
What is—and is not—being measured.
BLS pay describes U.S. wage-and-salary interior designers, while its national outlook includes an unincorporated self-employed component. The wage median cannot tell a new independent designer what a studio will earn, and a national projection cannot show how much renovation work exists in one city.
A median places half the measured workers above and half below it. It does not describe a beginner’s wage or explain the mix of hours, benefits, geography and experience in an individual offer. If your path is self-employment, revenue and profit are different again.
Before you compare offers
Three questions worth asking.

Separate employee wages from freelance fees and studio revenue.

Check whether the role includes technical drawings, site visits and permit-related coordination.

Compare local title, practice and supervision rules before assuming the same job exists everywhere.
Make it local
Use real postings as a second source.
Check your state’s practice and title rules, plus local requirements for drawings, permits, or supervision. Compare nearby employer postings for CAD, portfolio work, specialty, and site travel. Ask local firms what junior designers actually produce before choosing a course or marketing services.
Save two or three listings with similar duties and location. Write down the advertised range, required experience, contract type and what is not stated. This comparison is more useful than converting a U.S. national median into another country’s currency.
