Web Developer salary: pay and its limits
One number can orient you; it cannot price your first offer, a freelance project or your cost of living.
The BLS profile also covers digital designers, but this is its separate web-developer wage line. It is a median among employed workers, not a junior offer or freelance project rate.

These are annual U.S. employee wage thresholds from May 2025, shown on the same $0–$200,000 scale. They are not a minimum, maximum or career progression. Below the 10th threshold are 10% of measured workers; above the 90th are 10%.

Read the figure carefully
What is—and is not—being measured.
BLS publishes national wage and employment measures for web developers, while its shared profile also includes digital designers. The web-developer line is the relevant comparison for this guide. Its median and projection describe the occupation; neither predicts an offer for a new developer.
A median places half the measured workers above and half below it. It does not describe a beginner’s wage or explain the mix of hours, benefits, geography and experience in an individual offer. If your path is self-employment, revenue and profit are different again.
Before you compare offers
Three questions worth asking.

Compare front-end, back-end and maintenance roles separately; the same title can hide different responsibilities.

Check whether the offer includes ongoing support, on-call duties or a fixed project handoff.

For freelance work, price discovery, revisions, hosting and support time rather than comparing a project fee with an employee median.
Make it local
Use real postings as a second source.
Locally, check whether openings emphasize interfaces, server-side services, or maintenance. Compare stated pay and experience requirements, and ask which devices, systems, and support the developer will own. That scope matters more to a first application than the national median.
Save two or three listings with similar duties and location. Write down the advertised range, required experience, contract type and what is not stated. This comparison is more useful than converting a U.S. national median into another country’s currency.
