IQ is a standardized, norm-referenced score derived from performance on a specified cognitive test. It is not a quantity found directly inside a person, and it does not summarize creativity, character, motivation, practical wisdom, interests, or human worth.

A score needs a test and a comparison group
Raw correct answers become an IQ-style standard score only after a stable form has been administered to a suitable norm sample. The conversion depends on the test edition, age band, scoring rules and reference data.
That is why the same raw total cannot safely be converted with an invented internet table. A defensible report identifies the form, norm basis, uncertainty and intended use.

Why the average is often set to 100
Many modern scales transform norm-group performance to a distribution with a mean of 100 and a stated standard deviation, often 15. The familiar number is therefore a reporting convention, not a percentage correct.
A score of 100 does not mean half the questions were correct. It means the performance is near the norm-group average for that test and comparison rule.

Intelligence is broader than one item format
Cognitive batteries may sample verbal comprehension, fluid reasoning, visual-spatial processing, working memory, processing speed or other defined domains. Different batteries sample and combine these domains differently.
A short online form captures a narrower slice. Its interpretation should shrink with its coverage rather than borrowing the authority of a comprehensive individually administered battery.

Scores contain uncertainty
Observed performance changes with sampling error and can also be affected by language, familiarity, attention, health, fatigue, accessibility and administration conditions. Professional reports therefore interpret intervals and patterns, not a single number as perfect truth.
Uncertainty is not a flaw to hide. It is part of an honest account of what a score can support.

Age, language and norms change the comparison
A norm-referenced score answers a comparison question, so the reference group matters. A child is normally compared with an appropriate age group rather than with all adults, and an adult result may need age-specific rules when the instrument was designed that way. The date and composition of the norm sample matter too: schooling, language exposure and access to technology can shift how a task functions.
Translation is therefore more than replacing words. Instructions, vocabulary, symbols and examples can change difficulty or introduce construct-irrelevant barriers. A localized form needs native review, comprehension testing and evidence from its intended population before it shares a score conversion with another language.

How to read one result responsibly
Start with the exact test name and edition, then identify the domains sampled, administration conditions, comparison group and reported interval. Ask whether the result is a broad composite, a narrow task score or merely percent correct. A result without those details should be interpreted more cautiously, regardless of how precise its number looks.
Next connect the score to the reason for testing. A low-stakes curiosity result can prompt questions or practice; a clinical, educational or legal decision requires an instrument approved for that use and appropriately qualified interpretation. The more consequential the decision, the stronger the evidence and administration controls must be.

An IQ score is not a diagnosis, moral grade, career destiny, measure of effort, or complete prediction of life outcomes. It cannot establish what someone should value or what gives their life meaning.
