The 16 personality type codes, explained without putting people in boxes
A four-letter code is a compressed summary of four continuous preference balances. It can give you language for reflection, but it cannot capture your margins, contexts, abilities, values, relationships or direction in life.
The construction
Four questions create sixteen possible shorthand patterns
Each pair asks about a tendency, not a capacity. Everyone can use behaviours associated with both sides. Choosing one letter never removes the opposite side from your repertoire.
Where does attention tend to begin?
Inward processing / Outward engagement
Where does a person direct attention while forming ideas, joining activity and restoring capacity?
It is not: This is the Ikigain engagement balance, not a clinical social-anxiety measure, a sociability score, a Big Five Extraversion percentile or an official MBTI preference result.
Explore this pairWhat kind of information earns trust first?
Concrete particulars / Patterns and possibilities
Does attention begin more readily with observable particulars and precedent or with patterns, meanings and possible futures?
It is not: This preference does not measure intelligence, imagination, practical competence, attention to detail or cognitive functions.
Explore this pairWhat consideration tends to enter a decision first?
Consistent criteria / People, values and effects
Which consideration tends to enter first: consistent criteria and analysis or the needs, values and human effects involved?
It is not: The poles are not logic versus emotion, intelligence versus kindness, moral worth, empathy skill or decision quality.
Explore this pairHow does momentum tend to form?
Flexible openness / Structured closure
Does a person create momentum more naturally through early closure and planned steps or through retained options and adaptation?
It is not: This is not judgmental versus perceptive, organized versus disorganized, conscientiousness, reliability or time-management ability.
Explore this pairHow to read a result responsibly
The code is the last layer of interpretation, not the first. Use this sequence before deciding whether a description helps.
- 01
Read the four scales before the code
A code retains only which side of four mathematical midpoints an answer set reached. The raw positions and margins carry more information than the letters.
- 02
Notice boundaries and exact ties
A small margin can change with a few different responses. An exact midpoint is preserved as X rather than being resolved by a hidden rule.
- 03
Add the situation
Role, culture, access, safety, fatigue, practice and current demands can all affect which behaviour appears. A preference is never a complete explanation.
- 04
Test the description against counterexamples
A useful interpretation should help you find both fitting examples and important exceptions. It should not pressure you to perform a stereotype.

A scorer producing sixteen codes does not justify sixteen search pages. Two balanced batches—INTJ, ENFP, ISTJ, ESFP, INTP, ESFJ, ENTJ and ISFP—now have complete English articles linked here. Each guide keeps the continuous score margins, context and limits ahead of the shorthand label; the other eight summaries are not linked placeholders and will not receive pages until their own articles are written and reviewed.
The same code can hide very different evidence
Imagine two answer sets both resolve as ENFP. One may sit one raw point past the midpoint on three pairs; another may sit much farther from every midpoint. The letters match, but the boundary sensitivity does not. Different roles and cultures may also produce different everyday expressions of the same arithmetic pattern.
This is why the private result shows every raw sum, both range percentages, exact ties and near-midpoint cautions before it displays a complete shorthand.
What the code leaves out
- How close each pair was to its midpoint
- Which situations produced supporting or contradictory examples
- Skills, knowledge, interests, values and material constraints
- Mental health, neurotype, relationship conduct and consent
- Career performance, leadership, compatibility or life purpose
- Whether the same response pattern will remain stable over time
Common misreadings
What these patterns do not establish
The letters reveal sixteen natural kinds of people.
This assessment measures four continuous answer balances. Sixteen codes are possible shorthand combinations, not proof of sixteen biological or psychological categories.
A more pronounced position is more accurate or desirable.
Distance from this form's midpoint is arithmetic, not confidence, ability, health, maturity, rarity or value. Neither side of a pair is ranked.
People with the same code should behave alike.
Two people can share a code while sitting at very different margins and using different behaviours across work, home, language, culture and relationships.
A type can select a career or compatible partner.
Four preferences cannot establish skills, interests, values, constraints, conduct, consent, relationship quality or opportunity. Those questions require direct evidence.
Choose the lens that matches your question
Use 16-Type for four preference balances, Big Five for five broad traits, and Ikigai for a separate reflection on meaning and direction. One test does not secretly calculate the others.
