Software Developer
Software development connects a user need to a system that works, can be tested, and can be maintained after release.
Everyday work
The ordinary assignment.
Consider an application that lets a user save a request and find it later. A developer must understand the need and constraints, then decide how its pieces fit together. BLS describes analyzing needs, designing components, planning interactions, testing, maintenance, and documentation. Coding may be central, but the job also requires reasoning about an incomplete, duplicated, or updated request. The design has to make those cases understandable to the next person who works on it.
Later, the developer may discuss unexpected behavior with teammates, change an existing feature, or check that a fix has not broken another path. O*NET includes judging feasibility within time and cost limits, collaborating on design, improving performance, and communicating project information. Software work remains collaborative even when parts require solitary concentration. The result is stronger when others can understand, use, and safely change the feature.
Trade-offs
What the work asks of you.
Building from an ambiguous request can be absorbing. A simple design may be easier to maintain; an elaborate one may cover more unusual cases. Requirements can change midstream. BLS identifies communication, analytical judgment, attention to detail, and problem solving as important qualities. Ask whether clarifying a problem and checking assumptions appeals as much as getting code to run.
BLS reports a May 2025 median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers and projects 10% growth from 2025 to 2035. These US occupation figures are not junior pay or a specialty forecast. The shared BLS profile also covers quality assurance analysts and testers, whose work differs from development.
Getting started
Ways into the work.
BLS says developers typically need a bachelor’s degree in a computing or related field; some employers prefer a master’s degree. Internships can provide development experience. For exploration, build one modest application with a clear user problem. Draw its main pieces, implement a complete behavior, and record a design decision you revised. That tells a fuller story than disconnected coding exercises.
Show that you can test and explain your work. Record what happens with missing or invalid input, how you found a defect, and what another person would need for maintenance. These mirror BLS duties in testing and documentation. Read openings for their product domain and tools; O*NET titles range from application developer to systems engineer, so preparation varies by setting.
Pay and opportunities
Where to check the numbers.
The BLS wage is a national occupation median, and its outlook projects employment across software developers. The shared profile also discusses quality assurance and testing, so use the developer-specific lines. Neither measure says what a first-time applicant will earn or which specialty will hire locally.
Check postings for the product domain, programming experience, testing duties, and maintenance of existing systems. Compare pay and entry requirements among roles with similar duties. A software publisher and a manufacturer may ask developers to solve different problems under the same title.
AI and the work
Tasks, tools and judgment.
BLS expects demand related to software for AI, robotics, automation, connected devices, and security. That does not assure growth for any individual specialty. If you use AI to draft code, stay responsible for requirements, tests, and behavior. Notice whether the tool helps you examine a design or lets you skip reasoning you would need for maintenance.
Try a small practice task
Make a small request tracker that can add an item, show its status, and handle a mistaken entry.
- 01
Write a short user story and sketch the information the tracker needs to store.
- 02
Build one complete path from adding an item to viewing it, including a clear response to invalid input.
- 03
Ask someone to try it without coaching; fix one failure and document the decision behind the fix.
Afterward, ask yourself: Were you more energized by discovering the right behavior, implementing it, or tracing a failure after someone tried it?
Try a guided fictional case →These original exercises explore one part of the work. They are not graded assessments or complete simulations of the occupation.
