Software Developer salary: pay and its limits
One number can orient you; it cannot price your first offer, a freelance project or your cost of living.
BLS reports a separate developer wage within a profile that also describes QA analysts and testers. This median spans experience, sectors and specialties; it is not an entry-level expectation.

These are annual U.S. employee wage thresholds from May 2025, shown on the same $0–$250,000 scale. They are not a minimum, maximum or career progression. Below the 10th threshold are 10% of measured workers; above the 90th are 10%.

Read the figure carefully
What is—and is not—being measured.
The BLS wage is a national occupation median, and its outlook projects employment across software developers. The shared profile also discusses quality assurance and testing, so use the developer-specific lines. Neither measure says what a first-time applicant will earn or which specialty will hire locally.
A median places half the measured workers above and half below it. It does not describe a beginner’s wage or explain the mix of hours, benefits, geography and experience in an individual offer. If your path is self-employment, revenue and profit are different again.
Before you compare offers
Three questions worth asking.

Separate product software, internal systems and specialist engineering postings before comparing pay.

Read the level of ownership: feature implementation, architecture, reliability and support are not interchangeable.

Compare local base salary and total compensation using the same location, seniority and employment type.
Make it local
Use real postings as a second source.
Check postings for the product domain, programming experience, testing duties, and maintenance of existing systems. Compare pay and entry requirements among roles with similar duties. A software publisher and a manufacturer may ask developers to solve different problems under the same title.
Save two or three listings with similar duties and location. Write down the advertised range, required experience, contract type and what is not stated. This comparison is more useful than converting a U.S. national median into another country’s currency.
