Software Developer job outlook: demand and opportunities
A projection describes a population over a decade. It does not tell you how many suitable jobs exist where you live today.
BLS projects occupation-wide employment, not demand for a language, product category or particular new applicant. The combined developer-and-QA annual openings figure is not developer-only.

What the forecast can tell you.
Employment growth counts a change in the number of jobs over the stated period. Average annual openings, when published, also include replacement of people who leave an occupation. Neither measure identifies beginner-friendly jobs, specific employers or the effect of AI on this exact task mix.
The work behind the title
Which openings count for this path?
Check postings for the product domain, programming experience, testing duties, and maintenance of existing systems. Compare pay and entry requirements among roles with similar duties. A software publisher and a manufacturer may ask developers to solve different problems under the same title.
Read the duties and seniority behind a vacancy before treating its title as evidence of demand for the work you hope to do. A broad occupational group can contain jobs that share a name but not the same day-to-day tasks.

Search vacancies for the type of software and industry you would actually enter.

Look for repeated requirements around testing, maintenance and collaboration, not just a language list.

Ask how much work is on existing systems versus greenfield builds.
Repeat your search after a few weeks. A single week of ads can reflect duplicates, seasonal hiring or one employer’s campaign rather than a lasting local trend.
